Instrumental Music Fundraiser for 4th - 6th Graders

posted Aug 14, 2011, 8:17 AM by David Leonard

Mountain High Coffee and Books is holding a special Open Mic Benefit event on Saturday, August 27th from 5-10pm

All proceeds for this benefit will be directed to The Elementary Instrumental Music Program and their efforts to bring music back to our local schools!! This program was started last year by local and credentialed educators David Leonard, Patricia Jekel, Ami Barker and Reikor Deacon and is currently not funded by the school district.  Through their inspired efforts the program has raised funds through grants and brought music back to Cobb and Minnie Cannon Elementary schools for the first time in ten years! Last year the program offered lessons in trumpet, flute, saxophone, trombone and clarinet and it looks to offer several more instruments to this list in the coming year. The members of the program would like to begin expanding this tremendous asset to other schools in the district. Their goal is to bring the proficiency of the students’ ability to performance levels and ultimately create a community band/bands for all to enjoy!

The benefits of music in our education have proved invaluable.   Music fosters creativity, coordination and discipline. Further, music helps to promote self-confidence and self-esteem as well as provide the opportunity to develop a lifelong skill. Dr. James Catterall of UCLA reported that “students who were involved in music scored higher on standardized tests and reading tests than students not taking music courses. This finding was consistent for students of all socioeconomic backgrounds.” And a two-year Swiss study involving 1,200 children in 50 schools showed that “students in the music program were better at languages, learned to read more easily, showed an improved social climate, demonstrated more enjoyment in school, and had a lower stress level than non-music students.” The truth is that music in our education is invaluable and the benefits to our community that The Elementary Instrumental Music Program will prove to be invaluable too!

The Mountain High Open Mic to benefit The Elementary Instrumental Music Program will be held Saturday, August 27th from 5-10pm at Pine Summit Pool in Cobb. The address of Pine Summit Pool is 15427 Hoberg Rd; Cobb, CA 95426. We are asking for donated items for our raffle event as well as donation funds for the program. Donated funds can be made out to MUSD or Middletown Unified School District. Please include in the memo section: The Elementary Instrumental Music Program. Donated items can be dropped off at Mountain High in Cobb located in the Hardester’s Shopping Center just off Hwy 175 or at Mountain High in Hidden Valley Lake located in the Hardester’s Shopping Center just off Hartmann Rd. RAFFLE tickets will be available for purchase all month at both Mountain High locations. All donated items and funds will be announced throughout the Open Mic event thanking you for your generous donations.  Food, beverage and raffle games will be part of the fun and activity. We will have special guest performances and will feature our young local musicians and their talents all evening…  We hope to see you there!!
